LOCATION
- An International Airport is being setup in 700 Acres of land in Aranmula, Pathanamthitta District, the Pilgrimage Capital of Kerala situated between Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram
- Airport is situated amidst God’s own backwaters and is densely populated by high net worth individuals
- Only one hour drive away from ‘Sabarimala’, the second largest pilgrim centre in India with annual pilgrims of around 60 Millions (as per Government data for the year 2010) and the proposed Airport will provide infrastructure to pilgrims who wish to travel by air
- The majority of NRI passengers and NRK passengers of Trivandrum & Kochi Airport originate within 50 kms radius of this site
OPERATIONS
- The Aranmula International Airport will be built by March 2014 which will be able to cater Airbus A-320 / Boeing 747 like aircraft
- The Airport operation will be done by Emirates Group, one of the largest airlines with a turnover of around US$ 11 Billions and a profit of around US$ 2 Billions
- The runway length will be of 3100 x 45 meters with PCN 45 F/B/W/T
- The terminal building is designed to handle 1000 passengers at a time
- The airport will be privately owned and managed
BRIDGING THE AIR TRAFFIC GAPS
- The Airport is expected to serve four districts in Kerala state namely Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki and Alappuzha. This shall be referred as influential zone. Out of the foreign and domestic tourists’ arrival to Kerala, these four districts together accounts for about 21 per cent of foreign tourists and 14 per cent domestic tourists
- Even though Kerala has only 2.75% on overall population of India, the International aircraft movement in Kerala is 16.32% of overall international aircraft movement of India in the year 2010-11
- During the year 2010-11, the total number of air passenger to Kerala is 89.27 Lakhs out of 14.34 Crores air passengers in throughout India. It means 6.22% of overall air passenger of India hails from Kerala. The air passenger growth rate in Kerala is 10.23%. In two years time the expected air passenger in Kerala will be more than 11 Million. 40% of the Kerala air traffic is hailing from the influential zone of the airport
- In all the other three southern states (Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka), one airport viz.Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore is catering to 80% of the air traffic of the state. But in Kerala, the air traffic is evenly spread over to all 3 existing airports
- The proposed Airport will cater to the travel requirements of Non-resident Keralites, tourists and pilgrims to and from the influential zone
